IndiaTimes: The state owned Telecom operator Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) (NYSE: MTE) is planning to start a Wimax pilot in Mumbai and New Delhi to become the first Indian telecom company to offer Wimax services on a large scale. BSNL is also planning WiMAX pilot projects in Rohtak and Chennai.

It is important to note that the The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRA) has not yet assigned frequency spectrum for WiMAX services. MTNL recently invited expressions of interest (EoIs) for providing services on WiMAX 802.16. However, later it was withdrawn as the interested parties complained that they would not be able to offer services commercially unless the regulator assigns spectrum and announces its pricing.

Wimax is a perfect solution for countries such as India where the lack of infrastructure prohibits quality internet services. Wimax will be a blessing for Indian cities once implemented.
